There are extraordinary places that encourage extraordinary achievements. One of them is Holmenkollen, the Mecca of Nordic skiing, in the Norwegian capital Oslo. Dramas as well as sporting triumphs have occurred on this mountain. This place has encouraged people to surpass themselves and achieve top sporting achievements. I am one of them, although I am neither a ski jumper nor a cross-country skier nor a biathlete. My core discipline is security, risk and crisis management. And if you will, I had my greatest triumph to date on this mountain overlooking Oslo and the Oslofjord. It all started in January 2020…

I was sitting in front of my laptop in my home at the time, my wooden hut on the southern slope of Holmenkollen. As Global Director Health, Safety and Security for the NRC, the Norwegian Refugee Council, I went about my daily business, monitoring. The reports, especially coming from the WHO, made my inner alarm bells ring loudly and I went into alert state. The mixture of knowledge, experience and intuition led me to my first “sporting” feat of convincing the management board to declare a crisis... at a time when no one could have imagined a pandemic and certainly not its extent. It should be a decision that was worth its weight in gold...

As the top crisis manager, everything suddenly came together in my hut on Holmenkollen. My home office became the control center from which 20,000 NRC employees in 40 countries around the world were controlled and with them the humanitarian aid for thousands of those in need. In such a high-performance mode, you draw on all the wealth of knowledge and experience that you have accumulated in your (professional) life. About the Viennese elite police officer who, after his deployment in Kosovo, swapped his uniform for the school desk and the lecture hall at the university in Vienna and London in order to, after completing his studies, initially provide security and overcome crises in the conflict areas of the Middle East, such as Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. All of these experiences were priceless when, after years of traveling, I temporarily pitched my tents again in my hometown of Vienna...

When the Austrian OMV expanded into Romania, I prepared the ground for the largest acquisition in post-war history, so that I could then finally lead a “civilized professional life” in a suit and tie. I became Chief Security Officer of OMV, a position I then held for Erste Bank Group as Senior Vice President to secure its expansion into CEE. Wonderful experiences in highly professional companies that cannot be replaced. Finally, the wanderlust hit me again and I set up my tents in Asia, North America, the Middle East, West Africa and finally Oslo, or rather moved into my hut, which became a command bridge. We at the NRC handled the pandemic in a highly professional manner and even managed to provide global humanitarian aid for almost 10 million during the pandemic. To keep people going because we did the right thing in a timely manner and mastered this exceptional situation as a world-class team. We were proud of that, I'm proud of that. Family reasons led me back to my home town of Vienna to become a risk manager on my own behalf...

I founded my company. That alone would be risk enough. But I founded it in a time and in a world that had fallen into disarray in the post-Corona period and after Putin's attack on Ukraine. Since Donald Trump moved back into the White House, it has finally been turned on its head. The “West” is history, the Middle East is once again making history and the global south is rewriting history. In these erratic times of climate change, artificial intelligence and global demographic changes, global know-how, a global network, working with people in different cultures and mindsets and under risky and crisis-ridden conditions is a wealth of experience that I would be happy to make available to you. I would be happy to exchange ideas with you.
